| 2012 | Professor Peter Herrlich (Leibniz Institut für Altersforschung/Fritz-Lipmann-Institut e. V., Jena) receives the Ernst Jung Gold Medal for Medicine for his life's work in cancer research. His achievements include his outstanding contribution to elucidation of the signaling pathways that control growth and inflammatory processes in the cell, in particular the role of transcription factor AP-1 in the activation of oncogenes and suppression of procarcinogenic and proinflammatory genes by binding glucocorticoid hormones to nuclear receptors. His later work on metastasis also provided radically new insights into other transcription factors, their ligands, and tumor activation mechanisms. |
