Call for Applications Doctoral Scolarship Medicine under National Socialism
The Jung Foundation for Science and Research supports cutting-edge human medical research through awards currently totaling 540,000 euros per year.
Aware of its own history, the Jung Foundation will fund doctoral studies on medicine under National Socialism from 2024. For this funding line, the foundation has expanded the Jung Fellowship Program, which is aimed at young scientific and medical talents. The program, which is initially limited to the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, is intended to support selected doctoral students in medicine to conduct full-time research for one year. The scholarship of 15,000 euros is paid out in monthly installments of 1,250 euros over the course of a year. The money is not earmarked for a specific purpose.
The first research on the history of medicine in Hamburg during the National Socialist era appeared almost 40 years after the end of the Second World War. The persecution of Jewish colleagues, the exclusion of patient groups, studies and teaching, forced sterilization, criminal research, the biographies of the perpetrators and the murders of the sick were the focus. Even today, many questions remain unanswered.
Application
Prerequisite: Once funding has been approved, the doctoral student must take a break from medical studies at the medical faculty of the University of Hamburg and start the demanding research project full-time for one year. The entire working time must be dedicated to research. However, the consideration of family and care periods is possible.
Selection procedure:The selection of candidates is made by the Scientific Advisory Board of the Jung Foundation for Science and Research. Supervision takes place at the Institute for History and Ethics of Medicine at the UKE, which you should contact well in advance of your application. The candidates who are selected for the final selection round will be invited to a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board to present their research project in three minutes in English. The Foundation offers the candidates the opportunity to provide two PowerPoint slides in advance. Afterwards, the members of the Scientific Advisory Board will ask questions about the planned project for two minutes.

Application documents: An application for the Jung Fellowship consists of the following elements, which can be easily completed and uploaded on this site. Please note that we require that all information is provided in English:
- Description of the doctoral project (max. 450 words). Your application must outline the current state of research on your topic and identify the sources to be studied (e.g., bequests, medical records, visual materials, publications, etc.)
- Title of your doctoral project
- Justification of relevance of the topic (max. 60 words)
- An orienting outline and a binding timeline (max. 1 page each) should provide information about the scope of the project
- Curriculum vitae (PDF format; max. 1 page)
- Statement of the Institute for History and Ethics of Medicine of the UKE on the taking over of supervision
